Kids & Cavities: Simple Tips for Healthier Smiles

Helping children build good oral hygiene habits early on can make a big difference in how they care for their teeth as they grow. While cavities are common in kids, there are simple ways parents can support healthier smiles every day.

Make Brushing Fun

Children often respond well to routines that feel playful. Turning brushing into a game, like using a sand timer, playing a favourite two-minute song, or brushing alongside them, can help make the habit stick. Letting your child pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste can also add a sense of ownership (and excitement) to the routine.

Snack Smarter

What your child eats can impact their oral health. Sticky or sugary foods tend to linger on teeth longer, especially if brushing is not done right after. Offer tooth-friendly snack options, such as cheese, apple slices, carrot sticks, and whole-grain crackers. Drinking water instead of juice or soda can also help rinse away food particles and reduce the buildup of plaque.

Set the Example

Kids often mirror their parents, so brushing and flossing together can show them that oral care is a normal part of daily life. Encourage brushing twice a day and flossing once a day, even if it takes a little practice. Celebrate their efforts to build a positive connection with taking care of their teeth (even small wins are worth a high five).
